Karin Dodson Gignoux is on mission of world peace through food. She communicates with others through blogs, and online and offline publications specializing in food provenance, sustainable agriculture and the daily quest for a joyful meal among friends old and new.
Karin exercises her passion for good food and a well-told yarn, natural curiosity and a credible, authentic voice to uncover original food stories. Her vision of the world is one where our planet is sustainable, loved and respected, where we marvel at the wonders of a vegetable patch or a perfect piece of sun-ripened fruit to be shared with those we love, where we respect the animal life taken for our nourishment and in which every meal is a celebration. In Karin’s perfect world we admire and encourage our connections and interdependencies with others – from those we share our meals with to others who have helped to bring them to the table – and recognize that these connections and the ecosystem we support are sacred.
Growing up splitting her time between Nashville, Tennessee and Sonoma County, California, Karin had a unique experience of two regions rich in culinary traditions. It was as a student at the University of California, Davis that she discovered her passion for food while shopping at the local farmer’s market and the Davis Food Co-op.
One night while working in the local independent bookstore a customer recommended Georgeanne Brennan’s cookbook Potager that has a theme of seasonal cooking with fresh ingredients in the French country style. Karin cooked her way through the book during her academic year and upon graduation in June cooked her father his birthday meal from the summer chapter. Some of the dishes still remain staples in Karin’s home cooking repertoire.
Karin left Davis armed with a degree in English Literature and experience as co-editor of her university’s literary quarterly. She joined the ranks of IT professionals – and succeeded. Over the course of 12 years serving both consumers and small and large businesses in online advertising and the travel industries, she developed a strong business savvy and honed her visual and verbal communication skills with an aim to turn convert them to her first passion – food.
In 2002, Karin moved to the south of France near Grasse. She and her family are among the founding subscribers and active members of their local chapter of Community Supported Agriculture. Their home is set among an ancient olive grove, and each year they harvest the olives from their small 30-tree orchard and take it the local mill to be pressed for oil. They preserve as much of the fruit that they can from their fig and citrus trees.
When not eating or cooking for her family & friends, she is updating and communicating with other expats & moms via her personal blog, Mom in France. She likes to spend her weekends outdoors in the mountains or at the beach with her husband and two young sons.
